Walker Publisher-Boston
I try to aquire maps in very good conidition , but these antique maps were in very poor conidition, stains, missing broken section and worm holes, and are at the limit of the acceptable condition to restore a map. In woking with these antique maps I started with trying to develop uniform colors for the various sections of the maps. I was unhappy with the result since I was looking to achieve a more original feel to the series. To be able to maintain the tone of the antique maps I for a second time scanned the series at a much higher resolution, and am now able to retain much of the original texture of the antique maps.
While the series was in poor condition most of the stains were along the margins and the actual body of the maps and text were not damaged. When restoring a painting damage to a face is very hard to repair while repairs to a back ground present fewer problems.
I have included in this series maps that in various states of restoration from the raw scan, works in progress and finished works. I would appreciate getting your comments on the various finished works. The balance of the restored works in this series will take the form of trying to keep the feel of the original antique texture.
